Going well with godaddy until...
A little background
I have seen hate postings from Toyota to Kraft and anything in between and although some may have a valid point not everyone of them is a end of the world situation that needs to be criticized and broadcast to the world that the company, a product, service, or an individual is terrible. Most are due to misinformation and things that are out of anyone's hands and are solved in a timely and professional way.
This has led me to the conclusion with concrete fact that
PEOPLE ARE REACTIONARY
. In other words, people let their emotions dictate their actions without first researching it or letting the party(s) solve it before one blabs their mouth off -- if all of us let our emotions dictate our actions then we would be in a heck of a mess *(thinks about it and agrees hat we are anyway).
I have done it a few times by having a paper due at school and finishing it up and got going late, running lights, speeding, and basically putting me and others at risk just because I was late with a research paper and come to find out the class was cancelled when I got there, so the moral is... I know there is one in there but I basically told my self if it's late it's late. Same thing goes for anything I am connected with such as internet service, sometimes it's slow, down, or fast. I understand things are out of their hand and therefore give it time to resolve itself -- nothing is perfect 100% of the time, which leads me to
GODADDY
and my 5 years of experience. Had I found this site anytime before December 2009, I would have scoffed all of you and not believed anything, but now since I have experienced a problem and allowing the span of time to either rectify their oddity or to solidify it, I am here to tell my tale and join the ranks of the godaddy scorned.
I have been with GD or almost 5 years now hosting many domains and telling others to go there, recently, last year, I had a domain go out of payment for almost 30 days, i remembered one time I was late like that and I was able to pay the $7 and get it back online, but this time they wanted $80 to make it active.
What the heck for, just to click a button and make it active, come on GD. I was loyal and sent others to you.
I emailed them about this BS they wanted to put me through and explained how long I was with them and all the things I've done: they sent a reply but I never read it, I knew it would be some BS sob story about it's their policy, so I put it on the back burner just waiting till my domains expired this year.
UNTIL I had to go to go daddy and search for something and saw their SuperBowl Video Contest. I am a filmmaker, an editor, and so forth, I could do this and win $100k. So in the process of working an idea I came up with using a slogan and when I searched for it I found this site and it REALLY caught my eye ONLY because I received an email from a guy at intrust Domains, who is trying to get me to buy back my domain name at a higher price stating that my domain name :
will be listed for sale in the next 24 hours. This domain has been flagged as a premium domain and we expect it to sell quickly. Since you received a priority notice from us, you will be given first chance to acquire this domain.
What I want to know how they got a hold of it before the grey period that i understood domains have before they become available again to the general public?
I know GD had to have had something to do with this cause my email to them was that I would wait until it came out on the market and get it again for under $10 instead of paying them $80.
SO, I see the email this morning, I see this site and my nerves start to boil and I began looking through to see what other registrars people recommend and I like name.com so far.
As for web hosting, I never hosted with GD. I tried once but cancelled due to their control panel and their ftp info being of little use to me. I have used hostgator.com for 10 years with 0% downtime.
I just want to thank all of you for bringing this to light, I knew there was something amiss about GD and I usually trust my feelings but I mean come on Danika Patrick, Earnhart, and all those babes, it couldn't be bad, well, again, I was proven wrong and the actions that I have seen from GD these past few months have given me reason to move to another registrar, and I will tell everyone one I told to go to GD to go elsewhere. And that is usually me as I run and maintain 33 websites, so I just need to tell them that we are moving from GD. That ill get GD upset, 33 domains going elsewhere.
again, thanks and I will be turning the channel when ever GD comes on.

so for those that are like me that take things like this with "
a grain of salt
" please be advised that I posted with a real situation with godaddy.com that truly upset me.
So be weary of and aware of the practices of GD.

Tell us how it turns out about moving your 33 domains, if it goes smooth.
Word here is, Go Daddy will tell you something isn't right in the WhosIs; then you fix it; then GD says, "sorry, can't transfer domains within 60 days of changing WhosIs" - watch out for that! LOL

Hi, kanna84.. Can't quite gather but if you're trying to recommend a possible service provider, NoDaddy Forum Boards has a
Web Hosting Alternatives
section dedicated just for that purpose.. It's there for those of us who come here (at renewal time) specifically to see who others may be using right now (like *me*, grin)..

Re: Going well with godaddy until...
Since problems with domain name registrations seem to come up quite a bit on these forums, I wanted to try to clarify the expiration process for people so they're aware of what happens after their domain expires.
http://help.godaddy.com/article/608
From the day of expiration until 18 days afterward, you can still renew your domain without the redemption fee. You'll just pay the standard renewal rate. From day 19 forward, your domain is subject to the $80 redemption fee. So if you're looking to avoid the $80 redemption fee, you need to make sure your email address on file with GD is up to date so that you get the expiration notices. Otherwise you might not realize your domain is expired until it's too late.
What causes a lot of horror stories here from what I can tell is that people think they can avoid the $80 redemption fee by just waiting until it goes back to the public. Well, that may or may not work. The domain goes up for auction on day 25, and I believe the auction lasts 10 days if I'm not mistaken. If anyone has a backorder with GD on your domain, the backorder automatically bids $10 on it. Once the auction's over, if you haven't renewed your domain name at the end of day 42, then the auction winner is awarded the domain name.
The best way to avoid losing your domain name, with GD or any other registry, is not to be negligent with its registration. If the domain is really important to you, register it for 10 years and keep renewing it each year. Make sure your email address on file is up to date so you can get notifications about your account. The redemption fee is an industry standard. Most registrars charge a redemption fee. If your domain does somehow wind up in redemption, and you really need that name, $80 or $150 or whatever the redemption fee may be at your registrar is still a lot cheaper than what a domain squatter is going to charge you (typically $500+).
If you are going to try to cheat the redemption fee, backorder your own domain and check for it on domain auction websites regularly. But again, the only way to guarantee you keep your domain after expiration is to renew it.

Don't know about the grey period but there are sites and people who watch for expired websites. Seems like I've even encountered sites that show some that are DUE to expire in a few weeks. Not hard to imagine someone sitting in front of the screen waiting for appealing keywords they want to taste test.
Have had the deal you wrote of above that happen to me several times over. Telling me I can have back my domain for 2, 3, 5 hundred dollars. Doesn't always work but sometimes you get lucky if you just wait them out and try searching for your domain again a few days after they contact you. Got several of my own back that way.
